WILLIAM & SONS IS THE NONPROFIT publishing arm of the Shernoff Family Foundation, founded in 1985 to support a wide range of efforts, including education, the arts, consumer law and disaster relief.

The foundation first ventured into philanthropic book publishing in 1990 with Beneath the Ashes, a reportage on the Mt. Pinatubo disaster. Authored and produced by foundation board members, the book resulted in substantial contributions to relief projects in the Philippines.

In 2002 the Shernoff Family Foundation launched the William & Sons publishing house in order to continue this kind of philanthropic endeavor in earnest. It is now opening up such publishing opportunities to the public at large.
